Setting Digital Norms

As we get started using our various new tools, one thing that will be of utmost importance for teachers will be establishing some digital norms. For instance, Zoom makes it very easy for students to join meetings–as long as they know where to find the link.

Students are probably less likely to have the question of how to join a meeting, and more likely to have questions like “Where do I find the link for the meeting? Will it be on my email? Will it be on Schoology? And will it be the same link every time?” Since there are so many options for teachers in how they set up their Zoom meetings, setting the digital norms of where students need to go and when will be very important in this remote learning environment.

Take the time to think things through and realize that, in buildings where students have multiple teachers each day, that each teacher may have different norms as far as this goes. The more clear and consistent you can be for your particular group of students, the more likely students will be able to get beyond the frustrations of logistics.
