One of the simplest, but most consistent and effective tools I have been introduced to is one that was recommended to me a couple years ago by the amazing Sean Williams, one of our network administrators. The tool is called uBlock origin (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/ublock-origin/cjpalhdlnbpafiamejdnhcphjbkeiagm?hl=en), and it is an extension for your Chrome browser. This tool prevents content that I don’t want popping up on my screen. This includes ads and other materials that some of us have just grown used to popping up, even though we have to constantly be clicking to close these items. My favorite feature, however, is the ability to prevent Youtube ads from popping up while viewing videos, especially since these can get in the way when displaying a video for students.
You can download and add uBlock Origin to your Chrome browser using the link above, or by going to the Chrome Web Store and searching uBlock.
